Everything you need to know about this career path.
MongoDB is a NoSQL document database that stores data in flexible, JSON-like BSON documents. It is excellent for applications requiring fast iteration, flexible schemas, hierarchical data (like product catalogs or user profiles), and massive horizontal scalability.
It's highly recommended to understand relational databases (SQL) as well, because they solve different problems. However, you can absolutely learn MongoDB first if your stack (like the MERN stack) is built heavily around it.
PostgreSQL is a relational database (RDBMS) that strictly uses tables, rows, columns, and foreign keys. MongoDB is a document database that stores embedded, schema-less (or schema-flexible) objects. MongoDB excels at horizontal scaling (sharding), while PostgreSQL excels at complex ACID transactions across many tables.
A MongoDB Developer focuses on document modeling (embedding vs referencing), writing efficient queries, and the aggregation framework. A MongoDB DBA focuses on replica sets, sharding architecture, backup/recovery, and performance profiling.
Beyond basic CRUD, you must master Schema Design (access patterns), Aggregation (complex data transformation), and Indexing (performance). Build a capstone project that uses change streams, complex aggregations, and handles thousands of documents.
